Hilda and the Mountain King
Picking up where season two left off the movie tells the story of what happened to Hilda after she swapped places with the Troll baby. You will not want to view this one unless you have finished all of season two. It kind of acts as a season finale to season two.
Themes:
Trolls, walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, friendship, state of emergency, safety, people pretending to be something they aren’t, spreading lies, not checking to see if things are true or not, a mother’s love, resourcefulness, teamwork, mother/daughter relationships, body swapping, rules, not getting involved, magic, leadership, Troll hoards, loss, helping others, sacrifice, premonition visions, traditions, and fear
Language:
Hilda’s mother gets angry at a baby Troll and yells, “You stupid, stupid…”
The word “stupid” is used multiple times. The word “heck” is used once. One character says, “good lord.”
Stuff to be aware of:
Gore/Violence - A video mentions that trolls, “hunger for human flesh.” A troll swallows a pigeon. This isn’t just any pigeon though, it is a named one. A troll pushes a woman down and she gets three scratches on her arm that are red. She later has a bandage on it. One Troll collects bones and has a huge pile. An item is described as, “blood red.” This item ends up being a characters eye which he puts back in, but we don’t see it. A Troll gets shot with a light beam and turns into rock and crumbles apart.
Scariness - A magic spell goes wrong and things fly around a room and then there is an explosion. In one scene there are a bunch of small Trolls that jump all over Hilda and some look like they are bitting her. In this same scene there is a giant being that looks like Hilda’s mom, but is made of mud/rock and has glowing eyes.
Other - As you can see in the photo above Hilda kind of looks naked, but she isn’t. She is a troll and they don’t wear clothes. There is nothing sexual about it and there is no anatomy seen. The Trolls drink “Troll Mead.” There is a discussion about if Troll mom and dads make Troll babies, but Trolls aren’t really born. They just come from the earth, a child just comes to a parent (at least that is how I understood it). When Hilda turns back into a human she is naked, but you only see her head and feet from behind a rock.
Overall:
This was a very fitting conclusion to season two and proves that the writers can do just as good with a movie length show as they do with episodes. My nine year old daughter loves it too. It feels like D&D for kids set in a modern setting.
